Breast Augmentation: Profile

Prior to getting breast augmentation, you'll want to consider what is known as profile. The profile of an implant essentially refers to the ratio of projection to the base diameter. As such, a low-profile implant will have a flatter, wider appearance. A high-profile implant will have narrow base and a more conical appearance. Different profiles allow for a more natural matching of implants to the base diameter of the natural breast shape, while still offering a selection of volume choices.

Breast augmentation that features high-profile implants is ideal for women with narrow chest cavities, who still want a certain level fullness. Low-profile implants, however, while providing less volume, will present a fuller look for women who would like more cleavage enhancement from their breast augmentation.

Breast Augmentation: Placement

Another consideration in breast augmentation is whether to place the implant above the muscle or below the muscle. Since the implant is already going behind the mammary gland and breast tissue, the placement, in relation the pectoral muscle, will have an effect on the way the breast contours where it meets the chest. The difference is that sometimes the implant is placed in front of the chest muscle (submammary), and other times it is placed behind it (submuscular).

By placing an implant behind the muscle (submammary), the muscle can cover as much as two-thirds of the implant. This can help to hide the implant and give a smoother contour from the chest to the breast. The amount of breast tissue you have, your exercise habits, your individual body type and the look you wish to achieve are all factors that will play into determining the ideal placement position in your breast augmentation.

Breast implant placement is one of the primary issues you will want to discuss during your consultation. Incision Considerations for Breast Augmentation

In addition to choosing the ideal size, shape and profile of the implants to be used for your breast augmentation, the placement of the incision through which the implants will be inserted should also be considered.

If you have questions about which procedure is best for you, contact our office to schedule a consultation. Dr. Shuster will discuss the details and different techniques involved in breast augmentation either in or from his Florida office to help you decide what type is best for you.

In summary, there are four particular locations where incisions can occur.

Periarealor - This incision occurs along the areola complex (i.e., the pigmented skin around the nipple). A periarealor incision is very common in breast augmentation because the scar tends to be camouflaged by the darker skin of the areola.

Inframammary - An inframammary incision is placed in the fold beneath the breast. The inframammary incision is also a very common approach in breast augmentation. Of particular concern with this type of incision is the size and projection of the implant you choose. Once your implants are in, your breasts should still fold over to cover the scar, as the scar itself can be a little more noticeable than in the periarealor approach.

Transaxillary - The transaxillary approach involves inserting the implant through the armpit. This approach has benefits in that it is less noticeable because the incision is located away from the breast. It is also a more ideal approach if you have chosen to have your implants placed in a submuscular position. A potential drawback to a transaxillary incision is that, should you need another breast augmentation procedure, you most likely will not be able go back through the same scar whereas you can with the periarealor and inframammary approaches. In the event that a follow-up surgery is required, a new incision will likely be necessary.

Transumbilical - The transumbilical approach involves making an incision in the navel. The major advantage to a transumbilical approach is that it leaves no visible scar. Conversely, because the incision is so far from the final placement of the breast implant, the surgery can become complicated. Also, with this type of incision, pre-filled breast implants are not an option for your breast augmentation.

Please contact Dr. Shuster to learn more about these incisions as they relate to your particular interests.
