More About The Breast Lift

The breast lift, medically known as mastopexy, has been an ideal solution for women who have lost breast volume due to pregnancies or weight loss. A mastopexy is also a common option for women who wish to combat the effects of gravity, at least temporarily, through cosmetic surgery.

Though the breast lift procedure is sometimes done in conjunction with breast augmentation to achieve increased breast size and projection, the origins of breast lift surgery are more consistent with breast reduction surgery to correct the sagging or ptosis that comes with the removal of breast tissue.

Types of Breast Lift Procedures

Just as there are different types of women, different types of breast sizes and shapes, as well as different reasons for wanting a breast lift and different desired looks to be achieved, there are different types of procedures to address this multitude of concerns. Depending on your situation, Dr. Shuster will use either a concentric technique or a anchor-shaped technique for your breast lift.

• Concentric - Also known as the doughnut mastopexy, this technique is ideal for women with smaller breasts and/or breasts that have minimal ptosis. With the concentric technique, concentric circles are outlined and cut around the areola. The resulting doughnut-shaped skin around the areola is removed, allowing the nipple and areola to be lifted. The outer skin is then stitched around the areola. Occasionally, the stitched skin around the areola may wrinkle, but that wrinkling usually subsides within a few months after surgery. This is because the new changes to the breast require time for the body to adjust to. To minimize this wrinkling effect, it is sometimes necessary to make a cut from the bottom of the areola to the bottom fold of the breast. The resultant strip of skin can be removed allowing the two sides to be brought together.

• Anchor-shaped - The anchor-shaped breast lift is usually regarded as a more appropriate procedure for women with larger breasts or a greater degree of ptosis. In this technique, a keyhole shape is drawn directly above the areola. From the bottom of the keyhole, an anchor shape is then drawn extending from the right to the left side of the breast. After the shapes have been drawn, cuts will be made to allow for the removal of the anchor skin and any excess breast tissue. The areola is then lifted and stitched around the areola and down to the chest, then horizontally across the newly acquired bottom fold of the breast.

Breast Lift Results

The most noticeable result following a breast lift procedure is that your breasts will be fuller and appear shapelier. As with any surgery, however, scarring is a factor and will usually appear as faint lines where the incisions took place.
