Important Information for Women with Silicone PIP (Poly Implant Prothese) Breast Implants

PIP breast implants were made in France and used outside of the USA. In recent news, women that underwent breast augmentation outside of the United States with silicone PIP (Poly Implant Prothese) implants were strongly advised to exchange or remove their breast implants in a statement made from Xavier Bertrand, the French Health Minister, according to the New York Times.

What is wrong with PIP breast implants? According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the implant manufacturer did not use medical grade silicone gel, as they were supposed to. Rather, the PIP Breast Implants were made with industrial grade silicone, which has impurities and toxins. The PIP breast implants also have a rupture rate up to 10 times higher than we observe with USA made breast implants.

To summarize the issues, PIP manufactured implants were made of an inferior industrial-grade silicone. This issue is compounded because these implants are more likely to ooze and/or rupture exposing women to the impurities or toxins they contained. The ruptured silicone can cause medical issues for these patients. PIP silicone breast implants were not only used in France, they were exported to Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Venezuela, Britain, and Spain. PIP breast implants are not known to be used in the US because the implants did not meet USA safety standards and FDA requirements.

Dr. Shuster is an American board certified plastic surgeon specializing in plastic surgery of the breast. He performs the full spectrum of cosmetic breast surgeries, including implant exchange or implant removal. Dr. Shuster stated, "We have observed the problems associated with these implants in patients from outside the USA for years and I strongly advise patients to have them removed. Additional problems I have found in these women is an extensive thickening of the of scar tissue with in the breast." Patients with PIP implants have many options; exchanging the implants for a proper, FDA approved, silicone breast implant, exchanging for saline breast implants or removing the implants with no replacement. Additionally, other issues may have developed in women who had the PIP breast implants inserted overseas. All of the breast implants that Dr. Shuster uses are manufactured by the USA based company, Mentor and are made of real medical grade silicone that has been approved by the FDA and used in America for years.
