“Scarless” breast reduction is a relatively new term that has been getting attention recently. It refers to performing breast reduction solely with liposuction rather than the surgical removal of glandular tissue and excess skin.
What Is Liposuction-Only Breast Reduction?
Scarless breast reduction means utilizing liposuction alone to decrease the volume of the breasts. Liposuction can also support traditional breast reduction surgery.
While scarless breast reduction is a viable option for many women, it should be noted that there is a difference in the results of scarless vs. traditional breast reduction. Women with extreme ptosis (sagging) or very large breasts may not see the results they are hoping for with liposuction alone.
What’s the Difference Between Traditional and Lipo-Only Reduction?
Breasts are primarily made up of two types of tissue: fatty tissue and glandular tissue. Fatty tissue gives breasts their size and shape. Glandular tissue supports milk production and breast function.
It is possible to remove fatty tissue through liposuction. If you have a lot of fatty breast tissue, you may be a good candidate for liposuction-only reduction. However, lipo-only reduction may not yield the desired results for women with dense or glandular breasts. Glandular tissue cannot be removed through liposuction and must be removed surgically.
Additionally, a lipo-only reduction cannot improve the breasts’ lift or “perkiness.” This can only be achieved through surgery. It is common to have a breast lift when undergoing a breast reduction.
