The Challenge
The finest breast augmentations are those that are natural and match a woman’s figure. Perhaps no one understands this better than Dr. Shuster. Creating the most beautiful breasts not only means enhancing their size and shape, but also taking great care to avoid signs that a procedure has been done.
The Dr. Shuster Approach
Serving Fort Lauderdale, Miami and South Florida
Dr. Shuster specializes in breast augmentation. He combines his 20 years of surgical experience with innovative techniques to offer his patients the best individualized enhancement possible. His main goal with breast augmentation surgery is to create beautiful breasts while avoiding any visible scars directly on the breasts. While he is well-versed in all breast enhancement techniques, his preference is to insert implants through the armpit with the transaxillary approach in order to avoid a visible scar on the breast.
Dr. Shuster also believes that the best and most natural results are achieved by selecting an implant that is proportional to your figure. He spends an extensive amount of time with you during the planning phase of your surgery. Just as every woman’s breasts are unique, their breast augmentation surgery needs to be individualized specifically for them. Dr. Shuster’s philosophy is to learn what your goals are, educate you about breast implants and what is possible, and then use the various techniques in his repertoire to accomplish the most natural looking and feeling results.
Dr. Shuster’s Unique Background
Dr. Shuster has a long history of commitment and dedication to breast augmentation. He is proficient in the use of a variety of breast implant types and shapes. Having served as a principal investigator with the FDA’s study for the use of silicone gel implants, Dr. Shuster has a unique insight and unrivaled experience with breast enhancement.
Beautiful, well-proportioned breasts can have a dramatic impact on your appearance, helping you achieve a balanced figure. Each year, hundreds of thousands of women undergo breast augmentation in order to improve the size, shape and symmetry of their breasts. It is not only one of the most popular procedures Dr. Shuster performs for his Miami-area patients, but it is also consistently one of the most sought-after plastic surgery procedures nationwide.
During breast augmentation, Dr. Shuster will use a silicone- or saline-filled breast implant to provide a fuller, more attractive appearance. Depending on your preference, your outcome can be very subtle or more dramatic. Your procedure can deliver a variety of aesthetic benefits, including:
- Improvement in the size and shape of your breasts
- Restoration of lost breast volume following pregnancy or weight loss
- Correction of breast asymmetry
- More attractive cleavage
- Improved breast projection
- Improved appearance both in and out of clothing

Am I a Candidate for Breast Augmentation?
Most women who are in good health and would like to improve their breast appearance are good candidates for breast augmentation. If you are currently pregnant or breastfeeding, you’ll need to delay your procedure for at least six months after completing this process to allow your breasts time to recover. In addition, you should discuss any future pregnancy plans with Dr. Shuster during your consultation. The ability to breastfeed won’t be impacted by your procedure, and many women choose to get breast implants before starting a family.
While breast augmentation can address a wide range of aesthetic concerns, it doesn’t correct moderate sagging issues. In order to address sagging and restore a more youthful appearance, you may need to undergo a breast lift. In some instances, Dr. Shuster may recommend combining these two procedures for enhanced results.
Your Customized Breast Augmentation Procedure
Breast augmentation usually takes one hour to complete. Is performed on an outpatient basis using general anesthesia.
Dr. Shuster is on the medical staff of Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood and The Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach. With an emphasis on safety, Dr. Shuster performs all of his surgeries in the hospital. He has a consistent team of professionals, including some that have been with him for 14 years. Dr. Shuster feels that the hospital setting is the most appropriate setting for surgery.
While there are certain commonalities associated with all breast enlargement procedures, there is a significant amount of customization done in order to ensure you achieve beautiful, natural results that are appropriate for your body type and unique aesthetic goals. This customization is achieved by making thoughtful decisions regarding the following aspects of the procedure:
- Breast implant type
- Incision location
- Implant placement
- Implant size
What Are My Breast Implant Options?
There are two different breast implant options:
- Saline breast implants
- Silicone breast implants
The right implant for you will depend on your body type and aesthetic goals. Dr. Shuster uses Mentor breast implants that are made in the United States, are proven safe and approved by the FDA for breast enhancement.
Saline Breast Implants
Saline breast implants consist of a silicone shell filled with a sterile saline solution. Your implants will be filled after they are inserted into your breasts, providing Dr. Shuster with greater control over their size and an improved ability to correct breast asymmetry. Since the implants are filled after placement, a smaller incision can be used, which will shorten the scar.
While saline implants can achieve beautiful results, they are less popular than silicone implants for the following reasons:
- Less natural look and feel than silicone implants
- In the event of a rupture, the saline solution is absorbed by your body, but you will experience a deflated breast appearance that requires a revision procedure to correct
- More prone to rippling, especially for petite women with minimal natural breast tissue
Silicone Breast Implants
Silicone breast implants consist of a silicone shell filled with a silicone gel material. The implants are pre-filled by the manufacturer to the exact volume specified by Dr. Shuster. Silicone implants are typically the most popular option since they achieve a very natural look and feel. In the event of a rupture, your implant will retain its shape, preventing an uneven breast appearance. Silicone implants are also less prone to rippling than saline breast implants.
What Are My Breast Augmentation Incision Location Options?
There are three different incision locations used for breast augmentation:
- Transaxillary – along the natural creases of the armpit
- Inframammary incision – along the breast crease, which can lead to a visible scar on the lower part of the breast
- Periareolar incision – around the nipple, can lead to a crescent scar across the areola.
Dr. Shuster specializes exclusively in the transaxillary (armpit) approach to breast augmentation since it allows him to avoid any scarring in the breast region. It is also the most straightforward method of placing an implant under the muscle.
After making the incision, he will create a space under the pectoralis major muscle for the breast implant. Prior to placement of the implants, Dr. Shuster will insert breast implant sizers to assure the most optimum implant selection. Once he has determined the actual best size with the samples in place, he inserts the breast implants with a “No Touch” technique to ensure optimal safety. The incisions are then closed with absorbable sutures that are entirely under the skin and will not need to be removed.
What Are My Breast Implant Placement Options?
There are two different breast implant placement options:
- Subglandular placement – the breast implant is placed over the chest muscle
- Submuscular placement – the breast implant is placed under the chest muscle
Dr. Shuster exclusively places breast implants under the pectoralis major muscle (submuscular) for all of his primary breast augmentation patients. He chooses this location because it provides a more natural result by having more tissue cover the implant and a lower rate of complications. In addition, submuscular placement offers the following benefits:
- Reduced risk of rippling
- Borders of the breast implant are more effectively concealed
- Achieves a more gradual slope along the upper chest
- Breast cancer screening can be performed more easily
Breast Implant Sizing Options
Your choice of breast implant size will have a significant impact on your outcome. Several factors should be considered when determining the right implant size for your body type:
- Your height, weight and chest dimensions
- The amount of natural breast tissue present
- Your skin elasticity
- Your desired breast size
- Your lifestyle
Breast implants aren’t measured in cup sizes. Instead, they are measured in cubic centimeters (cc’s) for the following reasons:
- Bra sizes vary by manufacturer, so a D cup bra by one company may fit very differently than a D cup bra by a different manufacturer
- Using cc’s provides a standardized way to measure the size of an implant, allowing Dr. Shuster to achieve more precise results with your procedure
Breast implant sizes range from 120 cc’s to 850 cc’s. In general, 200 cc’s will result in an increase of roughly one cup size for smaller bra sizes (32 and 34), while it will take a slightly larger breast implant to achieve a similar increase of one cup size if you currently wear a larger bra size (36 and above).
Dr. Shuster’s goal is to achieve beautiful, natural results that accentuate your figure. In general, a moderately sized implant will most effectively achieve this outcome. However, it’s important to consider your lifestyle when choosing your implant size.
What Is the Breast Augmentation Recovery Process?
Dr. Shuster will provide you with specific care guidelines to ensure optimal recovery. Dr. Shuster keeps a close eye on his patient and you will have several follow-up appointments so that he can confirm proper healing and to keep up with your progress.
Typically, you may experience some pain and discomfort for two to three days following surgery. Pain medications will be prescribed to allow the most comfortable recovery possible. There may be some sensory changes following your breast surgery. In most cases, this will resolve over a few weeks as your body recovers. We review this with each patient prior to surgery.
You should be able to return to work four to five days after surgery, depending on your occupation. After one to two weeks, you can resume light exercise of the lower body. However, you will need to wait four to six weeks following breast augmentation before engaging in upper body exercise. Dr. Shuster will provide you with a precise timetable for resuming these activities as he monitors your healing.
How Long Will My Results Last after Breast Augmentation?
Breast implants are designed to provide women with long-lasting results; however, they are not quite permanent. Many women will never change their implants. Some will. Reasons to exchange breast implants include:
- A desire to change the size or shape of the implant
- Implant rupture or leak
- Complications such as capsular contracture
- To upgrade to the latest breast implant technology as advances are made over time
