Breast Implant Options

Dr. Shuster uses MENTOR® breast implants that are made in the United States, are proven safe, and have been approved by the FDA for breast enhancement. During your procedure, Dr. Shuster will use silicone breast implants or saline breast implants to increase the size, shape, or fullness of your breasts. The right implant for you will depend on your body type and aesthetic goals.

  • Silicone Breast Implants:

Silicone breast implants consist of a silicone shell filled with a silicone gel material. The implants are pre-filled by the manufacturer to the exact volume specified by Dr. Shuster. Silicone implants are typically the most popular option because they achieve a very natural look and feel. In addition, in the event of a rupture, a silicone implant will retain its shape, preventing an uneven breast appearance. Silicone implants are also less prone to rippling than saline breast implants.

  • Saline Breast Implants:

This procedure treats patients who have a moderate amount of skin laxity over the lower abdomen. An incision is made across the lower abdomen which allows Dr. Shuster to remove excess skin and tighten abdominal muscles at the same time. While saline implants can achieve beautiful results, they are less popular than silicone implants for the following reasons:

    • The look and feel are less natural
    • They are prone to rippling, especially for petite women with minimal natural breast tissue
    • If a rupture occurs, a deflated breast appearance is left behind that will require a revision procedure to correct

Breast Augmentation Incision Options

There are three different incision locations used for breast augmentation:

  • Transaxillary: Along the natural creases of the armpit
  • Periareolar incision: Around the nipple, which can lead to a crescent scar across the areola
  • Inframammary incision: Along the breast crease, which can lead to a visible scar on the lower part of the breast

Dr. Shuster specializes exclusively in the transaxillary (armpit) approach to breast augmentation, as it allows him to avoid any scarring in the breast region. It is also the most straightforward method of placing an implant under the muscle.

Breast Implant Placement Options

There are two different breast implant placement options:

  • Subglandular placement: The breast implant is placed over the chest muscle
  • Submuscular placement: The breast implant is placed under the chest muscle

Dr. Shuster exclusively places breast implants under the pectoralis major muscle (submuscular) for all primary breast augmentation patients. He chooses this location because it provides a more natural result by having more tissue cover the implant and a lower rate of complications. In addition, submuscular placement offers the following benefits:

  • Reduced risk of rippling
  • More effectively concealed borders of the breast implant
  • A more gradual slope along the upper chest
  • Easier breast cancer screenings

Your Customized Breast Augmentation Procedure

Breast augmentation can be performed by itself or in conjunction with another cosmetic procedure. If being performed alone, it takes approximately one hour. It is performed on an outpatient basis using general anesthesia. Dr. Shuster feels that the hospital setting is the most appropriate setting for surgery.

Dr. Shuster’s preferred method of breast augmentation is the transaxillary technique. He will create a two-inch incision high in the armpit.

Using this small incision, he can approach the pectoralis muscle from the side instead of having to cut through it. He will make a space under the muscle called a “pocket” where the implant sizers will be inserted. These sizers will help confirm the best size, shape, and position for the real implants. Once the best breast implants have been selected, Dr. Shuster will insert the breast implants with a “no touch” technique to ensure optimal safety. The incisions are then closed with absorbable sutures that are entirely under the skin and will not need to be removed.

Fat Transfer

Fat transfer can be used either to enhance breast implants, or by itself as an alternative to them. In fat transfer, Dr. Shuster will use liposuction to remove fat from one area of your body such as the stomach, thighs, or buttocks and then inject it into the breasts to add volume.

When used instead of breast implants, fat transfer can provide a subtle enhancement of ½ cup to one cup size larger. The results look and feel very natural. When used in combination with implants, fat transfer can fine-tune the results by smoothing the implant edges and providing an organic-looking padding around the implants.

The Breast Augmentation Recovery Process

Dr. Shuster will provide you with specific care guidelines to ensure optimal recovery. He and his staff will also keep a close eye on you during recovery, and you will have several follow-up appointments so that he can ensure that you’re healing correctly.

You may experience some pain and discomfort for 2-3 days following your breast augmentation surgery. Pain medications will be prescribed to help with this. There may also be some sensory changes following your breast surgery. In most cases this will resolve over a few weeks as your body recovers, and we will also review this with you before surgery.

You should be able to return to work 4-5 days after surgery, depending on your occupation. After 1-2 weeks, you can resume light exercise of the lower body. However, you will need to wait 4-6 weeks before performing upper body exercise. Dr. Shuster will provide you with a precise timetable for resuming these activities as he monitors your healing.

How Long Will My Results Last?

Breast implants are designed to provide long-lasting results; however, they are not quite permanent. Every patient is different. Many women will never change their implants, and some will.

Reasons to exchange breast implants include:

  • A desire to change the size or shape of the implant
  • Implant rupture or leak
  • Complications such as capsular contracture
  • Upgrades to the latest breast implant technology

What's the cost for a breast augmentation?

What’s the difference between a breast lift and breast augmentation?

The differences between breast lift and breast augmentation procedures can be confusing. Both procedures focus on the appearance of the breasts, but they address different concerns. A breast lift elevates breasts that are sagging due to natural aging, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or other factors. It changes the shape and form of your breasts, and raises the breasts’ position. In some cases, a breast lift can be combined with augmentation to simultaneously elevate and increase the size of the breasts.Breast augmentation only adds volume to the breasts. If you have mild breast sagging, implants may provide the appearance of a subtle lift, but moderate to severe sagging cannot be corrected by inserting implants without a breast lift.

Is breast augmentation revision possible?

Yes. Breast implant revision procedures require a plastic surgeon such as Dr. Shuster, who has the expertise needed to perform what is typically a more complicated surgery than the initial breast augmentation. If you have concerns about the results of a breast augmentation performed by another surgeon and are experiencing complications, please be sure to clarify when you schedule a consultation with Dr. Shuster.

How long does the procedure take?

Depending on the placement of incisions and the positioning of the implant, a breast augmentation procedure can take anywhere from 1 to 2 hours to carry out.

Will the procedure result in permanent scarring?

As with any surgical procedure, breast augmentation procedures involve incisions. These incisions will ultimately develop into scars. That said, there are steps that patients can take to ensure that their scars are light and less noticeable.

Will I need anesthesia for my breast augmentation?

The procedure can be performed either under general or local anesthesia. Patients can learn more about these options during their private consultation.

What's the cost for a breast augmentation?

The cost of a breast augmentation procedure can vary depending on factors such as location, surgeon's experience, and additional fees. Reach out to our staff today to learn more!
